When two people have been living together and they decide not to live together anymore, they are separated. When married parents separate, their marriage has not yet ended. They have to get a divorce to legally end a marriage. Parents who are not married can just agree on how they will cooperate to raise you after the separation. Or they can ask the Maine Court to make things legally binding. This is called a “Parental Rights and Responsibilities” Order. If either parent doesn’t follow the court’s order, the court can take steps to enforce it.
